Questions about fence hardware.
How many posts do I need?
One post per panel plus end posts and corner posts as needed. For a typical 100 ft straight run with 8 ft panels: ~12 line posts + 2 end posts = 14 posts total. Add 1-2 posts per corner. For a square enclosure with 4 corners: count perimeter / 8 ft + 4 corners.
Self-closing or standard hinges?
For pool fences, self-closing is typically required by local code (the gate must close automatically to prevent unattended pool access). For standard residential fences, either works - standard hinges are slightly cheaper, self-closing adds convenience for high-use gates. For commercial applications, self-closing plus lockable latches are typical.
Stainless steel or nylon hardware?
Stainless steel for coastal regions, frequently wet environments, or where you want maximum lifespan. Nylon for inland residential applications where cost matters and the environment is moderate. Both are reasonable choices for typical residential fences; stainless is significantly more expensive but lasts indefinitely.
What finish should I pick?
White hardware on white fence is the most popular - blends in. Black hardware on white fence creates contrast and emphasis (popular as a design choice). Tan hardware on tan fence blends. Mixing colors - white fence with black hardware - is an aesthetic choice; the hardware works fine either way.
Do I need pocket rails or T&G pickets?
For standard panel kit installations, the panels include their own rail integration - you do not need separate pocket rails or pickets. The rails and pickets in this collection are for custom fence sections, replacement of damaged components, or non-standard configurations where you are building outside the panel-kit system.
What is the warranty?
Hardware components carry a 10-year limited manufacturer warranty. Vinyl panel materials carry a separate longer warranty. Full details on our warranty page.
About DuraMax Vinyl Fence Hardware
A vinyl fence project requires more than just the panel kits. Posts hold the panels vertical and transmit wind loads to the ground. Post caps finish the post tops and add the aesthetic detail that makes a vinyl fence look intentional. Gate kits and hardware (hinges, latches, gate handles) handle the high-stress areas where the fence has to open and close repeatedly. Rails, trim, and channel pieces handle transitions, end conditions, and special configurations.
DuraMax BP carries the complete vinyl fence hardware catalog - over 40 component products across the following categories:
Posts: Blank Post, Line Post, End Post, Corner Post, 3 Way Post. Different post types handle different positions in the fence run. Line posts go in the middle of a run with panels on two sides; end posts terminate a run; corner posts handle 90 degree turns; 3 way posts handle T-intersections; blank posts are unconfigured for custom applications.
Post Caps: Ball Cap External 5 inch, Flat Cap External 5 inch, Gothic Cap External 5 inch, Traditional Cap External 5 inch, plus tan internal and external variants. Post caps finish the post top and add the aesthetic personality of the fence. Ball caps for traditional residential look; flat caps for modern aesthetic; gothic caps for ornate designs; traditional caps for the safe default. External caps sit on top of the post; internal caps insert into the post.
Gates: Gate Preassembled 42 inch Wide, Gate Kit. Preassembled gates ship ready to hang on hinges; gate kits ship as components for buyers who want to size or customize the gate.
Hinges: Hinge Set Adjustable White Stainless Steel, Hinge STE Self Closing Adjustable White SS, Large Hinge Set Self Closing White Nylon, Hinge Set Adjustable Black Stainless Steel, Hinge STE Self Closing Adjustable Black SS, Large Gunge Set Self Closing Black Nylon. Standard hinges for non-self-closing gates; self-closing hinges for gates that should close automatically (pool fences typically require self-closing per local code).
Latches: Gravity Latch White Stainless Steel, Gravity Latch Black Stainless Steel, Latch Large White Stainless Steel, Latch Large Black Stainless Steel, Gravity Latch Lockable White Nylon, Gravity Latch Lockable Black Nylon, Latch Lockable Dual Access Black Nylon (and Variant), Latch Lockable Dual Access Black Nylon, Latch Two Way Lockable White Zinc, Latch Two Way Lockable Black Zinc, Latch Two Way Lockable Dual Access White Nylon, Latch Two Way Lockable Dual Access Black Nylon. Lockable latches for security; gravity latches for simple non-locking applications; dual access latches for gates that need operating from both sides; two-way lockable for the most secure configurations.
Gate Handles: Gate Handle with Self-Drilling Screw White Nylon, Gate Handle with Self-Drilling Screw Black Nylon. The grip the user actually touches when opening the gate.
Rails and Trim: 2 in x 6 3/8 in x 94 in Pocket Bottom Rail with Steel, 2 in x 6 3/8 in x 94 in Pocket Top Rail, Picket Pack 7/8 in x 6 in x 59 3/4 in T&G - 15 Pieces, End Channel 1 in x 1 in x 57 1/8. Rails for horizontal structural members; pickets for custom or replacement fence sections; end channels for transitioning between fence sections or terminating a run.
For each component: confirm the color matches your existing or planned fence panels (white, tan, or black). Stainless steel hardware lasts longest in coastal or wet environments. Nylon hardware is more economical for inland residential applications.
Total project hardware cost typically runs 25-40% of the total fence project cost. The panels are the visible expense; the hardware is the structural and functional cost.
