Building choices for high wildfire-risk regions.
California Chapter 7A and similar Wildland-Urban Interface codes restrict accessory building materials. These DuraMax options are more code-compatible.
Non-Combustible Metal
Imperial metal garages and Bicycle Storage are all-steel construction. The building shell itself does not burn.
Low-Flame-Spread PVC
Insulated buildings use PVC outer surfaces. PVC does not ignite readily and self-extinguishes when flame source is removed.
Customer Code Verification
These are more fire-appropriate than vinyl sheds, but specific WUI certifications vary by jurisdiction. Verify with your fire authority.
Insulated, metal, or both.
Different jurisdictions have different requirements for accessory buildings in WUI zones.
Imperial Metal Garages
Non-combustible construction. Building shell does not burn. Best for high-WUI zones where steel construction is required.
Insulated buildings
PVC outer surfaces over insulated panel cores. Lower flame spread than wood or generic vinyl siding.
Bicycle Storage 6x6
Non-combustible steel construction at the compact scale. The right pick for bike or small equipment storage in WUI zones.
Questions about fire-retardant sheds.
Code compliance, defensible space, and what these buildings actually deliver.
Are these certified for California Chapter 7A?
The products are more fire-appropriate than standard vinyl sheds, but specific Chapter 7A certifications and ASTM test ratings vary by product configuration. For new construction in regulated WUI zones, additional modifications may be required (ember-resistant venting, specific door/window treatments). Always confirm with your local building department and fire authority before ordering.
What about defensible space?
The building material is only one part of fire safety. Defensible space (cleared zones around the building, vegetation management, ember-resistant landscaping) is critical regardless of building material. California and most Western states have specific defensible space requirements - usually 30 ft or more of cleared/managed area around any accessory building.
Are insulated buildings as fire-safe as metal?
Steel construction is non-combustible - the structure itself does not burn. PVC insulated buildings are low-flame-spread but not non-combustible. For the strictest WUI zones, steel construction is the safer choice. For moderate fire-risk zones, insulated buildings provide meaningful improvement over standard vinyl sheds.
Will my insurance accept these?
Insurance policies vary widely. In high-WUI zones, insurers often have specific requirements for accessory buildings. Confirm with your insurance carrier before ordering. The products themselves are not auto-approved by any insurance company.
What about the interior contents?
The building shell does not protect interior contents from heat damage during a fire event. Flammable items stored inside (gas cans, fuel for equipment, paper materials) can still ignite from radiant heat or ember intrusion through openings. Standard fire-safe storage practices apply regardless of building material.
What is the warranty?
Vinyl insulated buildings: 15-year limited manufacturer warranty. Metal Imperial garages: 10-year limited warranty. Bicycle Storage: 10-year warranty. The warranties do not cover fire damage or any catastrophic loss - they cover manufacturing defects. Full details on our warranty page.
About DuraMax Fire-Retardant Building Options
California's Chapter 7A (and similar Wildland-Urban Interface building codes in other Western states) restricts what materials and construction methods are acceptable for accessory buildings in high wildfire-risk zones. The general principle: non-combustible exterior surfaces, ember-resistant designs, and reduced ignition risk. Generic vinyl sheds may not satisfy these requirements; specific DuraMax products handle them better than alternatives.
This collection brings together 8 DuraMax options that are more appropriate for California and high-risk Western regions:
The insulated buildings (10x10 and 13x10 Garden Glass Rooms, 13x10 Gable Top, 13x10 Flat Top) use PVC outer surfaces over insulated panel cores. PVC has significantly lower flame spread ratings than wood and most vinyl sidings - it does not ignite readily and self-extinguishes when the flame source is removed. The insulated panel construction also provides better thermal mass than thin-panel construction, slowing heat transfer into the building.
The Imperial metal garages (12x20 and 12x26 in two color combinations) are all-steel construction with a powder-coat finish. Non-combustible - the structure itself will not burn. The interior contents are still vulnerable to heat damage and ember intrusion through openings, but the building shell itself does not contribute to fire spread.
The 6x6 Bicycle Storage Metal Anthracite is also non-combustible steel construction. Smaller scale than the Imperial garages but the same principle - the enclosure itself does not burn.
Critical clarifications: these products are more fire-appropriate than vinyl sheds, but they are not certified to specific California Chapter 7A test standards by default. For new construction in regulated WUI zones, you may need: (1) additional ember-resistant venting modifications, (2) specific door and window treatments, (3) defensible-space landscaping around the building, (4) professional fire-engineering review. Always confirm with your local building department and fire authority before ordering for a regulated zone.
Beyond California: many Western states (Colorado, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah) have similar WUI codes with varying requirements. The general principle - non-combustible or low-flame-spread materials - applies broadly.
