Climate Control

Which studio for which medium?
Painting, drawing, watercolor: Glass Rooms for natural light. Ceramics: Gable or Flat Top with controlled humidity. Photography: Gable or Flat Top with controlled lighting; size depends on backdrop needs. Music: Gable or Flat Top with acoustic treatment added; 16x10 or larger. Woodworking: 16x10+ with dust collection and ventilation.
Can I install a kiln?
Yes, with proper electrical service. Most residential kilns require a 240V circuit with a 30-50A dedicated breaker - hire a licensed electrician for the installation. Ventilation through the wall is also required for kilns (most jurisdictions require an exhaust system). The insulated panels can support these features but consult with your kiln manufacturer and electrician for specifics.
Do I need plumbing?
Not for most studios, though painters and ceramicists often want a slop sink for cleanup. If you plan plumbing, install rough-in through the slab before pouring. A small slop sink with a drain line to a French drain or proper sewer connection costs $1,000-$2,500 to install professionally.
Do I need a permit?
Yes for all sizes. The smaller (10x10, 13x10) often require permits due to insulated occupancy-ready features even at lower square footage. Larger sizes additionally require structural engineering. Plumbing or kiln installation adds inspection requirements. Permitting is the customer's responsibility per our policy.
How do I climate control it?
Most artist studios install a ductless mini-split system (typically 9,000-18,000 BTU depending on size). Cost: $1,500-$3,500 installed. Provides both heating and cooling efficiently. For sensitive media like oil paint or clay, the consistent temperature and humidity matter as much as comfort.

The solid wall panels give you more wall space for shelving, equipment mounts, and acoustic panels than the Glass Rooms.

What you add: concrete slab, electrical service from the main panel (most studios install a sub-panel with multiple outlets and dedicated circuits for equipment), climate control (ductless mini-split typical), interior finishing (drywall, flooring, paint, trim), and any specialty needs (sink for paint-cleanup, ventilation for fumes, acoustic treatment).
