Separate work from home. Without leaving home.
Dedicated focus space, hard daily separation between work and home life, professional video call backdrop, and a real commute that takes 30 seconds.
Real Separation
A dedicated outbuilding creates hard daily separation between work and home life. The commute is 30 seconds but the psychological boundary is real.
Year-Round Comfort
Insulated panels plus a small mini-split system handle both heat and cooling. Comfortable enough for 8-hour workdays in any climate.
Professional Backdrop
Video calls look better against a deliberate space than a shared bedroom. Many buyers add finishing materials (wood paneling, paint colors, framed art) specifically to upgrade their video presence.
Solo office, team space, or full home office?
Different work styles need different sizes and configurations.
10x10 to 13x10 kits
Compact solo office - desk, monitor, file cabinet, chair, video call backdrop area. Glass Rooms for daylight focus, Gable/Flat Top for wall space.
16x10 to 19x10 kits
Solo office with collaboration corner, credenza, separate video call area, ample wall space. Big enough for an actual second chair for meetings.
23x10 kits + BOSS Tiny House
Two-person team space, or full home office plus side function (yoga / break area), or office + studio combination for multi-discipline work.
Questions about backyard office buildings.
Is a backyard office worth it?
For full-time remote workers, almost always yes. The cost premium over converting an existing room is real ($25k-$60k all-in for a finished 100-200 sq ft backyard office vs $2k-$10k for a converted bedroom), but the daily focus and life-separation benefits are substantial. Most owners report sustained productivity gains and better work-life boundaries within the first few months.
Which size for full-time remote work?
The 13x10 (130 sq ft) is the minimum for a comfortable full-time office without feeling cramped. The 16x10 (160 sq ft) is more comfortable for daily use, especially if you take video calls or want a second chair for occasional meetings. Larger sizes if you want a hybrid use case (office + studio, office + workout area).
How do I get wifi to it?
Options: mesh wifi extender ($150-$400) if the building is within 100 ft of the house - simplest setup. Wired ethernet via outdoor-rated cable through underground conduit ($300-$800 for materials and installation) - most reliable, supports gigabit speeds. Dedicated outdoor mesh node ($300-$600) for buildings further from the main router.
Do I need a permit?
Yes for all sizes. The insulated occupancy-ready features typically require permits regardless of footprint. Larger sizes additionally require structural engineering. Permitting is the customer's responsibility per our policy. Allow 4-8 weeks for the permit process before placing your order.
What is the total finished cost?
Typical 130 sq ft backyard office: kit and shipping $10-15k, slab $3-5k, electrical service $1.5-3k, interior finishing $2-4k, climate control $2-3.5k, wifi setup $0.5-1k, furniture $2-5k. Total finished: $22k-$36k. Larger sizes scale up proportionally. Total is comparable to a residential home renovation of similar square footage.
What is the warranty?
DuraMax's 15-year limited manufacturer warranty on all eleven kit options. Full details on our warranty page.
About DuraMax Backyard Office Buildings
The backyard office solves the most common work-from-home problem: maintaining real separation between work life and home life when both happen in the same building. A dedicated outbuilding gives you a hard physical and psychological boundary - leave the house, walk 30 feet, enter the office; reverse at the end of the day. The boundary is real in a way that converting a spare bedroom or basement corner never is.
DuraMax BP carries eleven kit options suited to backyard office use. The choice depends primarily on your work style and what you need to fit in the space.
The compact options (10x10 Glass Room, 13x10 Glass Room, 13x10 Gable Top, 13x10 Flat Top) at ~100-130 sq ft fit a solo office setup: desk, second monitor, file cabinet, comfortable chair, video call backdrop area, and a small bookshelf or storage. The Glass Rooms add extensive daylight for buyers who do not want to spend the workday under fluorescent lighting; the Gable and Flat Top options give you more wall space for monitors, whiteboards, and posted reference materials.
The mid-size options (16x10 and 19x10 Gable and Flat Top) at ~160-190 sq ft support a more elaborate office: large desk or standing desk plus an actual meeting / collaboration corner with two chairs and a small table, a credenza with printer and supplies, separate area for video calls, and ample wall space for white boards, monitors, and posted materials.
The large options (23x10 Gable and Flat Top, BOSS 8.5x20 Tiny House) at ~170-230 sq ft support a two-person team office (two workstations plus a small meeting area), a full home office with side function (workspace plus a separate yoga / meditation / break area), or a combined office + studio configuration if your work spans multiple disciplines.
For all eleven options, the practical office setup requires: a finished interior (drywall, flooring, paint - typically $1,500-$3,500 DIY for a 100-200 sq ft kit), a dedicated electrical circuit at minimum (or sub-panel for larger spaces - $1,500-$4,000), a ductless mini-split for climate control ($1,500-$3,500 installed), reliable wifi or wired ethernet from the main house, and the office furniture itself.
Permits: all sizes require permits. Larger sizes additionally require structural engineering documentation. If you plan a small bathroom in the larger kits, plumbing inspections add to the process. See our permits policy.
