Privacy, semi-privacy, or accent style?
Nine options by privacy level, height, and color.
Privacy + lattice top kits
Best for reactive dogs or street-visible runs where you want to limit visual stimulation. Tan or white finish. Lattice top adds aesthetic detail.
Semi-privacy panels
Vertical slat pattern - partial visibility plus airflow. Best for dogs that benefit from environmental stimulation. 5 ft and 6 ft heights, white finish.
Accent fence panel kits
Full privacy plus accent design top sections. Combines visual privacy with aesthetic detail. Tan and white options.
Questions about dog run fencing.
How tall does dog run fencing need to be?
5 ft minimum for small-to-medium dogs that do not jump. 6 ft for medium-to-large dogs or known jumpers. For high-jumpers or escape artists, consider 6 ft height plus an interior lean-in section, or look at a taller specialty fence configuration. Most DuraMax dog run options are 5-6 ft to handle the typical residential dog range.
Privacy or semi-privacy?
Privacy if your dog is reactive to passing dogs, people, or vehicles - blocking the visual stimulation calms reactive behavior. Semi-privacy if your dog benefits from environmental engagement and is not bothered by passing activity. Most owners with reactive or anxious dogs go privacy; most owners with confident dogs go semi-privacy for the airflow and lower cost.
How do I stop my dog from digging under?
Three options: bury the bottom 6-12 inches of fence below grade so digging hits buried vinyl; install a buried wire mesh barrier extending out from the fence base into the run; or install a concrete or paver footer at the fence base. The first two are most common for residential dog runs.
Will dogs chew or damage the vinyl?
Vinyl handles incidental chewing far better than paint on wood. Persistent chewing by a determined dog can damage corners and trim over time. The panel surfaces themselves are resilient to claws and surface wear. Most owners report no chewing damage over years.
Do I need a permit?
Most residential dog runs do not require permits, but check local rules. Some jurisdictions require permits for any fence over 6 ft tall or in setback areas. HOA approval may be needed in subdivisions. See our permits policy.
What about ground surface inside the run?
The fence does not address ground surface. Most owners install composite turf, gravel, or concrete as the dog run base - all easier to maintain than grass which gets worn down. Drainage matters - the run should not become a mud pit during wet seasons.
What is the warranty?
DuraMax's limited lifetime manufacturer warranty on the vinyl panel material. Hardware components carry separate warranties (typically 10 years). Full details on our warranty page.
About Vinyl Dog Run Fencing
Dog runs need fence that handles the specific stress of regular dog use - claws, the occasional bite-test, lifted-leg marking, mud and dirt accumulation, and the constant weather exposure of a fenced outdoor area. Wood handles dogs but rots from the moisture and marking, then requires repainting every 3-5 years. Chain link handles dogs but provides no visual privacy and rusts at the welds. Vinyl handles dogs better than either alternative - no rot, no rust, no painting, and easy washdown cleaning.
DuraMax BP carries nine vinyl fence panel configurations suited for dog run applications. The panels are 5 to 6 ft tall (the safe minimum for most dogs - taller for large or jumping breeds) and come in multiple privacy levels and colors.
The full privacy options (Greatbackyardz Tan Vinyl Privacy with Lattice Fence Panel, White Vinyl Privacy with Lattice, White Vinyl Privacy with Accent) block visibility through the fence. Best for: dogs that get reactive to passing people or vehicles; dog runs in front-yard or street-visible locations where you want to limit visual stimulation; backyard runs adjacent to neighboring properties where both privacy directions matter.
The semi-privacy options (Greatbackyardz White Vinyl Semi-Privacy at 5 ft and 6 ft) include vertical slat patterns that block some visibility while allowing airflow and partial visibility through. Best for: dogs that benefit from some environmental stimulation; dog runs in backyard locations where airflow matters; aesthetic balance between privacy and openness.
The Privacy 12 inch T&G options (DRPV1, DRPV4) are tongue-and-groove privacy panel kits with optional lattice tops. Same full-privacy as the panel kits above but with the structural advantages of T&G construction.
For all options: panel kits are 6 ft wide (or 8 ft depending on configuration) and connect with posts (sold separately - see our fence hardware collection). Post spacing depends on panel width and local wind exposure - typical 8 ft on center. Posts set in concrete footings 30-36 in deep.
Dog-run-specific install considerations: bury bottom 6-12 inches of fence below grade to discourage digging-under behavior (or install a buried wire mesh barrier at the bottom); plan for vinyl scratch resistance (vinyl handles claw marks better than paint but persistent digging at posts can wear the surface over years); include a proper gate with self-closing hinges and lockable latch (use the hardware in our fence components collection); consider drainage so the run does not become a mud pit (gravel or composite turf base works better than dirt or natural grass for high-use areas).
Color choice: white is the most popular and matches most home and yard color schemes; tan works with darker home exteriors or wooded yards where white would be too stark a contrast. Both colors are UV-stabilized for long-term color retention.
