Two paths to a finished backyard office.
Vinyl sheds give you the structural shell at a lower price - you add insulation, drywall, electrical, climate control. Insulated buildings start with insulation built-in and skip the conversion work.
Two Paths
Vinyl shed shell + DIY conversion ($4k-$11k after the kit). Or insulated kit + minimal finish-out ($3k-$6k after the kit). Different cost / effort trade-offs.
23 Kit Options
5 vinyl shed shells (84-120 sq ft) plus 11 insulated buildings (100-230 sq ft) plus the BOSS Tiny House. Every size and style for backyard office use.
15-Year Warranty
Full DuraMax limited manufacturer warranty on every kit. Same warranty across both vinyl and insulated paths.
Shell + DIY finish, or insulated kit?
Different price points, different timelines, different finished results.
Vinyl shed + DIY conversion
Apex Pro, Woodbridge Plus, Woodside Plus vinyl sheds as the structural shell. Add interior insulation, drywall, electrical, climate control. Total path cost: $4k-$11k after kit.
Insulated kit + light finishing
Glass Rooms, Gable Top, Flat Top kits at sizes 10x10 to 23x10 plus BOSS Tiny House. Insulation built in. Add interior finishing, electrical hookup, climate control. Total path cost: $3k-$6k after kit.
Cost, time, finish quality, permits
Vinyl is cheaper but adds DIY time and a less refined finished result. Insulated is more expensive but faster and produces a more polished interior. Permits often favor vinyl at smaller sizes.
Questions about backyard office conversions.
Vinyl shell or insulated kit?
Pick vinyl shell + conversion if you have DIY time and want the lower total investment, especially at the 10.5x8 size where you may avoid permits. Pick insulated kit if you want faster project timeline, more refined finished result, or you are committed to the larger sizes (over 130 sq ft) where permits are required either way.
What does the vinyl-to-office conversion involve?
After installing the vinyl shed: (1) interior insulation between studs (2-inch rigid foam typical), (2) drywall over the insulation, (3) electrical service run by licensed electrician with at least one dedicated circuit, (4) ductless mini-split installation for climate control, (5) interior finishing - paint, flooring, trim, baseboards. Plan 2-4 weekends of DIY plus electrical and mini-split hire.
Can the Apex Pro 10.5x8 work as an office?
Yes - it is the most office-friendly vinyl shed because of the side door (second access point) and 2 windows (significant daylight). Many buyers pick the Apex Pro 10.5x8 specifically for office conversion. The 84 sq ft is tight for a full office setup but works for a single-monitor solo workstation.
Do I need a permit?
For the vinyl shells at the smaller sizes (10.5x8 area), often no - 84 sq ft is under most permit thresholds. For the larger vinyl (10.5x13, 15x8), usually yes at 130-120 sq ft. For all insulated buildings, almost always yes regardless of size due to occupancy features. Confirm with your local building department before ordering.
How long does the full conversion take?
Vinyl shell + DIY conversion: 4-8 weekends for an experienced DIYer including the kit assembly. Insulated kit + finishing: 2-4 weekends. Add 4-8 weeks for permits, electrical hiring, and mini-split scheduling. Most projects from order to occupied office: 8-16 weeks total.
What is the warranty?
DuraMax's 15-year limited manufacturer warranty on all 23 kit options. The warranty covers the DuraMax kit components only - not your DIY finishing work, electrical, or third-party components. Full details on our warranty page.
About Backyard Office Sheds
This collection brings together every DuraMax kit that can credibly serve as a backyard office - both the vinyl sheds suitable for DIY conversion and the insulated buildings designed for occupancy from the start. 23 kits total. The choice between paths depends on your budget, your DIY appetite, your finishing standards, and your timeline.
The vinyl shed shell path uses one of five vinyl sheds (Apex Pro 10.5x8, Apex Pro 15x8, Woodbridge Plus 10.5x8, Woodbridge Plus 10.5x10.5, Woodbridge Plus 10.5x13, Woodside Plus 10.5x8) as the structural shell. You then add interior insulation (typically 2-inch rigid foam between studs, $400-$800 for materials), drywall ($300-$700 installed DIY or $800-$1,500 hired), electrical service ($1,500-$3,500 by licensed electrician), climate control ($1,500-$3,500 mini-split installed), and interior finishing (paint, flooring, trim - $500-$1,500). Total path cost: $4k-$11k on top of the kit price. Finished result is comparable to an insulated kit but at a lower total investment for some sizes.
The insulated kit path uses one of eleven insulated buildings or the BOSS tiny house, starting with insulation, finished panel walls, and electrical-ready features. You add only interior finishing (paint, flooring, trim), electrical service hookup, and climate control. Total path cost: $3k-$6k on top of the kit price. The kit costs more but the conversion is simpler and faster, and the finished result is typically more refined.
Which path is right depends on three factors: your time vs money trade-off (DIY insulation and drywall takes weekends, hiring it out costs $3-7k), your finishing standards (insulated kits have factory-finished interior panel surfaces that look better than DIY drywall in most cases), and your permit jurisdiction (some jurisdictions allow vinyl sheds without permits but require permits for insulated buildings regardless of size - the conversion path can let you avoid permits at the 10.5x8 size in some places).
Permits: the vinyl sheds at the smaller sizes (10.5x8, 10.5x10.5) often avoid permits in many jurisdictions; the insulated buildings almost always require permits. Larger vinyl sheds (10.5x13, 15x8) and all insulated buildings require permits in most municipalities. See our permits policy.
